I don’t hide the fact that I like electric cars. A lot. I’ve got a beauty this week and I have certainly enjoyed it. This is the refreshed 2025 Mercedes-Benz EQS 450 4Matic sedan, an incredibly luxurious all-electric sedan. The masterminds at Mercedes have really pushed the boundaries of luxury and technology with this car. If you love the Mercedes S Class and want to go electric, this is the pinnacle unless you go up to the EQS 580.
The EQS models come as sedans and SUVs both. I reviewed the sedan and SUV models back at the end of 2022 and thought they were both terrific at the time, but MB has really stepped up the game with this 2025 version. .
Performance
The EQS has a dual-motor setup powered by an upgraded 118-kilowatt lithium-ion battery that is putting out an amazing 355-horses, a very strong 590 foot-pounds of torque and it has 397-miles of range.
0-to-60 is just 5.4 seconds, and it has rear-wheel steering which truly enhances handling and makes parking this very long sedan a breeze. The dual-motor setup makes this an all-wheel drive vehicle.
There are paddles on the wheel to adjust the regeneration. I am a fan of strong regeneration, which means as soon as you let off the gas pedal, the car starts to slow, and the friction from the brakes sends current to the battery to charge it. In addition, it cuts down on brake wear also, great if you are a mostly in-town driver. For all the things they got right on this EV, I can’t understand why they don’t have a true one-pedal driving system, something I really enjoy.
Exterior
I find the exterior to be very attractive, and it is extremely aerodynamic with the lowest co-efficiency of drag of any car made. If you are opposed to somewhat of an egg shape, this may not be your jam, but overall, I love the looks.
Of course, an open grill is not needed and for 2025, the grill has been updated. The hood does not open, but Mercedes technicians can access it, but don’t expect a frunk. It is not needed anyway with all the cargo area in rear.
21” multi-spoke wheels really set off the Cote d’ Azure light blue exterior. The lines of the car are sculpted, it has a swooping roofline, and a rear spoiler. The door handles pop out when you approach with the key. For 2025, and I say BRAVO BENZ for bringing back the 3-pointed star standup hood ornament, it looks great.
Interior
The interior is simply amazing. Heated, cooled, and massaging seats engulf you. The heated steering wheel with controls feels really good and the wheel has a big Mercedes star right in the middle. The headrests have super comfy pillows attached that can be removed if they bother you, but if not, they feel great.
Hit the start button and the real magic happens. Across the entire dashboard from one side to the other, appears a continuous 56” digital display. Even the front seat passenger has their own screen and controls. There are actually three screens under one piece of dark glass that runs all the way across what Mercedes calls a Hyperscreen, and with good reason. At first glance it is almost overwhelming.
The gauge cluster in front of the driver can be configured many different ways with all the info you could ever want. I stay on the range screen pretty much all the time. You can change the entire look of the screen by choosing Understated, Sport, or Classic, and you can even put a navigation map up that works with Waze. It is super-bright and colorful and very easy to read.
Above the center console is where you find the EQS settings screen to let you know about range and battery usage, Navigation, Bluetooth, Burmeister audio, and what media you want to use. You can also hit the apps button, settings, comfort, performance, and under functions, one of my favorite features (my AMG GLE S63 has this) Car Wash mode.
One touch of the button folds the mirrors in and makes sure all windows and the moon roof are closed tightly. It will deactivate if you go more than 12-miles per hour. I’ve never seen this on any other brand vehicle.
The center console is made of beautiful Nappa leather and very soft to the touch. There is also a shortcut menu there, and a black button that registers your fingerprint and puts all your personal settings in with just a touch, but Mercedes dealers tell me it never really seems to work as intended.
Two people can register their settings by fingerprint if you want to brave it. On the console is the start button, an ill-advised place for the emergency flashers that I turned on by mistake all week, and you can change the various drive modes.
For rear seat occupants, there is a fold-down armrest, and an electronic control panel for rear seat heat and air. There are USB-C ports for charging, and it comes with a couple of matching throw pillows that fit nicely in the small of your back. Rear seats are power also and you can slide them forward and backward, and they recline.
The trunk area is very deep and large with underneath storage and a bag to carry your level 1 charger. The EQS is really a big hatchback and there is a nice, thick cover that blocks the rear window. The back seats fold down if more room is needed.
Standard Equipment
This luxury sedan comes loaded with standard features. The EQS 450 sedan comes standard with the full MBUX Hyperscreen setup and also has 64-color ambient lighting, a panoramic glass roof, power front massaging heated and cooled seats with memory, soft-close doors, a Burmeister 3D audio system, wireless phone charging, and a voice-activated assistant that responds to natural speech commands by just saying Hey Mercedes.
You also get surround view camera, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an air ionizer system, and a lot more.
Safety
On the safety front, you get Driver Assist-the Mercedes semi-self-driving system, adaptive cruise control, lane centering, automatic emergency braking with cross-traffic detection, blind-spot assist, evasive steering assist, surround-view camera, active park assist, and driver attention monitoring systems.
Options
There is a long list of options totaling roughly $25,000. The main ones are $6,500 for the paint, $9,550 for the upgraded interior, $2,000 for the head-up display, $1,600 for the wheels, and some more miscellaneous items.
Ride and Drive
The ride and handling are fantastic, it is a very composed car and is amazingly quiet inside. Acceleration is strong like most electric cars, even this one that weighs in at close to 3-tons. I have to mention the Sound Experience, it totally captivated me. What makes it special is how the EQS blends immersive sounds with synchronized lighting, acceleration feedback, and optional seat vibrations, creating a multi-sensory experience that turns driving into a personalized audio-visual journey. You can choose from Silver Waves, Vivid Flux, Roaring Pulse, or Serene Breeze my favorite.
Outside the vehicle, the EQS 450 emits a soft, chime-like pedestrian alert sound at low speeds through its Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System, offering subtle, regulation-required audio cues without artificial engine noise. Both the inside and some outside sounds can be switched on or off, but it makes sounds outside the car for a few minutes after you turn it off or as you approach the car. Makes for a wonderful conversation topic.
What You'll Pay + MPGe
MSRP as equipped is $134,860 before any discounts, incentives, or specials. It does not qualify for the $7,500 Federal credit. Fuel economy is rated at 91 City, 93 highway, and 92 combined MPGe.
Charging
Charging times are not as good as the Lucid, but still quite acceptable. The 2025 Mercedes EQS 450 charges in about 95 hours on a standard 120V outlet (Level 1 110-Volt standard plug), around 11–12 hours on a 240V Level 2 home charger, and approximately 31 minutes to go from 10% to 80% on a 200 kW DC fast charger.
You can choose either a $1,000 charging credit or a complimentary Mercedes Branded home wall box charger, which I highly recommend.
Verdict
Would I recommend this as a car to purchase if you want to take the leap to a luxury electric? No. Would I recommend it as a wonderful car to lease? In a heartbeat. There is not one single new electric car I would recommend purchasing. Another option if you want to purchase is to get a slightly used one. Looking at the Manheim Market Report, recently one the same color, a EQS 450 4Matic sedan with 49 miles on it sold for $73,000. This is why you don’t purchase electric vehicles outright.
Overall, this is an incredibly enjoyable sedan and is wonderful to drive or be a passenger in.
