If you're a fan of Toyota's BAJA racing heritage, you'll love what I have for you this week. It's the new-for-2025 Tundra TRD Rally CrewMax. It pays tribute to Toyota's racing past with ionic red, orange and yellow design elements. But it's not just about looks. The SR5-based model adds off-roading goodies, too.
Exterior
The Tundra is a great-looking pickup. The TRD Rally package is available with four exterior colors, this one being Ice Cap.
It adds red, orange and yellow tri-color decals to the black grille, front doors and tailgate and upgrades to 18-inch TRD off-road wheels with tri-color center caps. Skid plates, mud guards and TRD exhaust are part of the package, too.
SR5 standard features include LED headlights with daytime running lights, LED fog lights, LED taillights, a cab-mounted LED Cargo Light and power heated side mirrors. Oh and be prepared to step up - running boards are not an option on the SR5 and we're talking 11.2 inches of running ground clearance for this configuration.
This CrewMax model is equipped with a 5.5-foot bed, but a 6.5-foot is available.
Performance
A non-hybrid i-FORCE twin-turbo V6 delivers 389 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, and it's mated to a 10-speed automatic. It's a great powertrain overall, and it delivers excellent acceleration. The Tundra is equipped with 4WDemand Part Time 4WD w/electronically controlled transfer case and auto limited slip differential, along with a multi-link rear suspension.
The TRD Rally upgrades to a TRD off-road suspension with Bilstein® shocks, and adds an electronically controlled locking rear differential, Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control and Downhill Assist Control.
Interior
Can I just say - what a nice interior! It has an unexpectedly luxurious feel to it with a lot of soft-touch materials and nice stitching. I love the tri-color TRD Rally badging on the dash.
Based on the SR5, the TRD Rally upgrades to 8-way SoftTex-trimmed and heated front seats with yellow and orange stitching. The comfortable and cushiony driver's seat is I have to say, amazing, and probably my favorite cabin feature.
The TRD perforated- and leather-wrapped steering wheel is also very well done. The TRD Rally also features a red TRD push-button start, TRD leather-wrapped gear shift knob and aluminum sport pedals.
I would love to see Toyota make its 12.3-inch digital driver's display standard across the Tundra lineup, but alas, the TRD Rally has the SR5's 4.2-inch digital display. It looks rather antiquated and you just don't get the same functionality. I can, however, deal with the 8-inch multimedia screen even though it's not Toyota's largest. It runs Toyota's latest multimedia/navigation system, Hey Toyota voice command, and a 9-speaker sound system.
You'll find traditional climate controls in the center stack along with a large volume dial. The TRD Rally upgrades to dual-zone climate. The center console is a well-designed rugged command center for your off-road pursuits.
The brake auto hold and parking brake buttons are delegated to in front of the gear shift knob. USB and USB-C ports reside in the large center console bin.
The second row is, well, like a living room. As in huge with tons of leg and headroom even with stadium seating. You get the same wonderful comfort and stitching as you get up front, plus nice soft-touch seat backs. The 60/40 split fold-up rear seat reveals storage underneath.
A/C controls aren't digital but there are USB-C ports and a 12 volt. There are two deep cupholders in the rear of the large center console, and two not-so-deep cupholders in a rather stubby drop-down center armrest.
Truck Bed and Tailgate
A power vertical rear window opens up to the aluminum reinforced composite bed with a deck rail header and side rails with adjustable tie-down cleats. All Tundras feature a easy lower and lift power release tailgate.
Options
Options include the TRD Rally Package ($8660), Spare Tire Lock ($75), Wheel Lock ($105), TRD Performance air filter ($135), Carpet floor mats ($199), Ball mount ($89) and Bed mat ($224).
Safety
Tundra models come standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5. While not Toyota's latest safety suite, it includes a list of great safety tech that includes Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist and Automatic High Beams.
All Tundra models are also equipped with Toyota’s Rear Seat Reminder. Blind Spot and Rear Cross Traffic Alert and trailer detection are available as an option for the SR5.
Ride and Drive
I absolutely love the ride and drive in here. I cannot say enough about the comfortable suspension in city/highway driving. Wow, is the ride quality superb. Acceleration is excellent, steering feel is great, and when it comes to braking, it's very smooth - not just the stopping power, but the brake pedal mechanism itself. It's also quiet in here, adding to the pleasant and enjoyable ride. I will say parking any pickup can be a challenge, even with a shorter bed, if you're not used to it. Also the ground clearance could be a deterrent for those with mobility issues.
Verdict
With its heritage looks and added capability, the 2025 Toyota Tundra TRD Rally is well-priced at just over $62,000. Overall, it's a really enjoyable pickup with a cool vibe, impressive comfort and off-road cred.
